Irritable Bowel Syndrome Treatment FAQ
How do you Treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) with hypnosis?
We utilize two approaches to the treatment of relieving IBS symptoms.
The first and primary method is the proven IBS treatment method of Dr. Olafur Palsson, Associate Professor of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It utilizes suggestion and metaphorical hypnosis. Research shows that about 4 out of 5 clients benefit from treatment.
The second method is that of hypnoanalysis which includes regression therapy and desensitization.
How do I know which IBS treatment is right for me?
During pre-visit contact, you will get an idea of what might be most effective and your options for treatment.
At the first session, you will go through a thorough history which may include symptom experience, stressors, IBS triggers, onset, and pre-onset history. You will then discuss with your therapist and come to a clear decision as to which process would be more effective.
How many sessions are there for IBS treatment? How frequently will we meet?
The IBS treatment protocol is 8 sessions in total. After the initial session, subsequent appointments are ideally every 2 weeks.
Regression therapy typically ranges from 8 to 10 sessions on a weekly basis. If this is a viable option to reduce IBS symptoms then the therapist will provide you with an educated estimate of the number of sessions.
What is my first IBS session going to be like?
At your first session you will experience:
- a thorough clinnical interview
- medical and psychological history
- current symptoms and their severity
- review of past treatments and experiences
- review medical treatment and confirm that you have a firm diagnosis of IBS
- experience hypnosis
- come to a mutual realistic expectation of treatment
- explain and educate as to treatment plan and symptom log sheets
How long are the sessions?
The North Carolina IBS protocol consists of 45-50 minute sessions.
The Hypnoanalysis session are approximately 90 minutes in length.
How soon will I know if the IBS treatment is working?
You will know, typically by the 4th or 5th session if hypnosis for IBS is effective for you. Some clients experience relief immediately while others have a more gradual progression.
The key here is that everyone is unique and our bodies and minds respond uniquely as well.
What if I’ve tried everything and I am skeptical about hypnosis?
That is why you have the chance to experience hypnosis at your first session to decide for yourself.
Hypnosis is a powerful tool that can unlock our potential and healing capabilities. I believe in a healthy amount of skepticism until you experience hypnosis for yourself so you can make an educated decision with an experienced professional.
How much do the treatments cost?
In most cases, if you have health insurance with out-of-network coverage, there is a strong possibility that you could get 50-80% reimbursement. We will be happy to help you find out your options and work with your insurance company.
The basic or 45-50 minute sessions are $125 per session.
Can you administer IBS treatment over the phone or with Skype?
If the basic session protocol is a viable option then it is possible to administer the treatment via Skype or a similar webcam program. An experienced hypnotherapist wants to see his or her client to pick up on signals that may be lost over the phone.
In order for extended hypnotherapy sessions to be administered via Skype, you must first have a 90- minute teleconsult and more in depth history before any approval will be made.
